Cello String Notes

Cellos have four strings whose notes are normally C, G, D, and A and ascend in order of pitch with C being the lowest note and A the highest. Cello E strings are also available

Cello String Attachment

On the upper part of the cello, the strings are wrapped around pegs in the peg box while on the lower part of the cello, strings are fitted to the tailpiece.

Cello String Tuning

The cello pegs at the top are used to tune the cello by loosening or tightening the attached string. The strings are stretched over the bridge which transmits the string vibrations to the rest of the instrument through the sound post.

Cello String Materials

Previously strings were made of guts of cattle and sheep but with advances in technology, newer, longer lasting strings have been manufactured which are wound or plated with metals such as aluminum, chrome, silver, tungsten, platinum and even gold. Advancements in the core technology have also seen the rise of synthetic or metallic cores.

How long do Cello Strings last?

This generally depends on how frequently the instrument is played, what materials the string is made of and how your instrument has been set up.

Most string players change their strings every 9-12 months. Professional players replace their strings more frequently due to the number of hours they spend practicing.

Strings gradually lose their responsiveness and brilliance over time even if they are not played. Regular switching will keep your instrument produce its best sound.
