Double Bass String Notes

Double basses normally have four heavy strings whose notes are E, A, D, and G and ascend in order of pitch with G being the lowest note and E the highest. In Jazz band basses, a fifth string is occasionally added tuned to C.

Double Bass String Attachment

On the upper part of the bass, the strings are wrapped around bass tuning pegs while on the lower part of the bass, strings are fitted to the tailpiece.

Double Bass String Tuning

The bass tuning pegs at the top are used to tune the instrument by loosening or tightening the attached string. The strings are stretched over the bridge which transmits the string vibrations to the rest of the instrument through the sound post.

Double Bass String Materials

Previously strings were made of guts of cattle and sheep but with advances in technology, newer, longer lasting strings have been manufactured which are wound or plated with metals such as aluminum, chrome, silver, tungsten, platinum and even gold. Advancements in the core technology have also seen the rise of synthetic or metallic cores.

How long do Double Bass Strings last?

This generally depends on how frequently the instrument is played, what materials the string is made of and how your instrument has been set up.

Some string manufacturers recommend changing their strings every 1-2 years (especially gut) but 4-5 years is not uncommon. Professional players replace their strings more frequently due to the number of hours they spend practicing.

Strings gradually lose their responsiveness and brilliance over time even if they are not played. Regular switching will keep your instrument produce its best sound.
