The musicians who commissioned this piece asked for a piece that should be as full of effects and as virtuosic as possible.
The two parts of the title clarify a symbiosis of tonal languages: "time in_time out", an energetic piano trio, contains contemporary elements before a clearly discernible modern jazz background. One could also call it a "chamber jazz trio".
"Time" is the most important element of jazz phrasing. To play "in time" is not just playing "in rhythm", the correct phrasing, the "timing" is essential for the "groove".
One of the most famous jazz albums is "Time Out" by Dave Brubeck, containing the titles "Take Five" (in 5/4 time) and "Blue Rondo à la Turk" (in 9/8 time). "Time Out" thus also symbolizes odd rhythms. This composition, too, contains two each of rhythmical and melodic motives, both "in time" in the sense of even time signature and rubato-less phrasing and in "time out", that is, odd time signatures which sometimes also are to be taken more freely. The melodic writing seems to have been held conciously simple and is partly pentatonic. The harmonic structure, however, consists of much more complex chord layers; these are also called "voicings" in jazz.
In spite of all harmonic and melodic jazz influences this composition is not a jazz piece in traditional sense - swing phrasing (triplets) has not been used and rather approaches classical, "even" phrasing.
The idea of a symbiosis of tonal languages is not new. For me, successful attempts of joining together the worlds of jazz and chamber music are the works of Chick Corea, Clare Fischer and Billy Childs. It is in context with this tradition (that includes the "classical" composers Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Bernstein and Previn) that "time in_time out" must be seen.
